How to Properly Water Your Lawn

A healthy lawn requires water.  It is best when Mother Nature provides it but that is not always the case.  To keep your lawn happy, you should supplement rain by watering your lawn.

How much should I water?

The technical answer is, it depends.  Weather, how much sun you get, the type of soil you have, among other factors all combine to make your situation unique.  You want to water enough so that it soaks the ground at least 6 inches.  However, you should phase the soaking.  If you water faster than the ground can absorb, then the water will just run off.  Try soaking for 30 minutes, waiting, and then soaking again.  How do you know if your soil is wet enough?  You should be able to push a 6 inch screwdriver into the ground.  Avoid overwatering.  The ground should not be squishy or muddy.

When should I water?

It is best to water your lawn in the early morning.  The air is cooler and water is less likely to evaporate in the sun.  Depending on the weather, you should water 2 or 3 times per week.  It is better to get a good soaking a couple times a week than to superficially water everyday.

What type of sprinklers should I use?

You want to use the best delivery method for your lawn.  A well placed built in irrigation system is a big initial investment but provides optimal coverage and may pay for itself over time.  If you do not have an irrigation system, you can use hose attached sprinklers.  A pulsating sprinkler is best for an established lawn.  An oscillating sprinkler is best for newly seeded lawns as it will not wash the seed away.  No matter what type of sprinkler system you have, make sure they are in good working order and provide adequate coverage.  In addition to the sprinkler, you can use a smart device to help you.  You can find simple timers at most home and garden centers.  You can buy Internet-Connected smart irrigation system controllers that takes a lot of the guesswork out of the process.  No matter the budget, technology can make the process more efficient.
